I actually hate milk. I’m not sure what it is about this white liquid that really throws me off. I’ve never really liked it plain, though I will have it in cereal, coffee or hot chocolate. Oh and ice cream. But, these ways to consume calcium are a bit difficult and I feel that eventually you need to have some steady source of calcium that doesn’t involve heavy cream and egg yolks.
Well I have found that love in yogurt. Growing up in an Indian household, I spent most of my life eating yogurt. Until I was older, I usually only ate plain yogurt, sometimes with a bit of honey swirled in if I wanted it to be on the sweeter side. There are some of the store yogurts that I found OK, but then I discovered Fage Greek yogurt, which is very yummy. Then I looked at the price tag and nearly fainted. Around the time when I realized that I was spending about $20 a week on yogurt, I realized that this insanity needed to stop. Luckily, I have an Indian mommy who has been making yogurt for as long as I can remember. Plus, she has culture smuggled in straight from the motherland. This is definitely one of those instances where something that my family does that is totally normal to me gets me the weirdest looks from my friends. What? Making yogurt? Insanity! But ask any brown person and I’m sure they’ll give you an explanation.
