Happy New Year!

by Manasi

Yes, I’m aware it’s nearly February, but these are worth the post. For New Year’s Eve, a friend from college decided to throw a costume party where you dress up as your favorite reality star. I chose Kim Kardashian as I got to wear a velour track suit and stuff my butt. I would show pictures, but that’s not what this blog is about. As I’m known as the ‘cupcake baker’ I offered to bring dessert. I knew I wanted to make a champagne cupcake and rattled my brain as to what frosting would go well with it. After a lot of thinking, I settled on a strawberry frosting–basically champagne and strawberries.

Before I get onto the recipe, a little triumph on my part with these babies. A couple weeks before these, I had made a vanilla/chocolate cupcake and they were terrible. I mean, they were edible, but apparently, after four months in the new condo I still suck at using my oven. I know I should be buying an oven thermometer, and it’s on my list, but there are so many other things that catch my fancy that it always gets shoved aside as ‘boring.’ Anyway, the transition from my rental electric oven to a relatively brand new gas oven has been a smidge rough. I finally started just turning recommended temps down by 25 degrees and letting things bake longer. And my patients (of which I have very little!) completely paid off with these babies!

Welcome to Miami!

by Manasi

Though I had high plans of blogging a lot during my winter break, apparently watching a lot of bad TV won. I think I have also successfully forgotten all of the information I learned during my first semester of medical school. This probably will not bode well for the future. Either way, it was a really relaxing break that started off with a five day trip to Miami with my sister. I know South Beach is apparently the place to go out and dance and such, but a) you probably don’t want to see me dance, b) my sister is not yet of drinking age and I figured it would be nice to actually spend time with her.

The trip was fun, though apparently the huge snowstorm that was attacking the entire east coast made Miami unseasonably cold. Of course it was 80 degrees the week leading up to our trip and then it dipped into the 50′s or 40′s during the time we were there. Either way, it was better than the foot of snow that Massachusetts received and definitely better than the 15 degree weather up north. I think it was a nice relaxing trip for both of us, as we had been up late studying for finals and such.
